Product Description

The Lemon & Ginger puzz is Eigo Matsuo’s personal interpretation of the mysterious red Fuzz Face associated with Jimi Hendrix’s late-1969 and 1970 Band of Gypsys period—the striking red pedal fitted with white Jazzmaster-style knobs.

Inspired by the fierce fuzz sounds heard throughout Hendrix’s Woodstock, Berkeley and Fillmore East era, the puzz combines brilliant high-frequency bite with a powerful, restless low end. It sounds raw and explosive at full output, yet cleans up beautifully from the guitar’s volume control.

The exact circuit inside Hendrix’s original red Fuzz Face remains uncertain. Builders including Roger Mayer, Dunlop and KR Musical Products have therefore created their own interpretations, each with a noticeably different voice.

The puzz continues that tradition with Eigo’s own ideas and unmistakable Lemon & Ginger character. It is based on his earlier Cashew Nuts FUZZ – Gypsy Style, but developed into a more versatile, refined and pedalboard-friendly design.

From Clean to Rampant Fuzz

Although the puzz has only two controls, it offers an exceptionally broad tonal range.

Set the pedal for full fuzz and use the guitar’s volume control to move naturally between:

  • Sparkling, slightly hairy clean tones
  • Dynamic crunch
  • Fuzz-flavoured overdrive
  • Thick rhythm sounds
  • Singing lead tones
  • Full, rampant psychedelic fuzz

The transition is smooth and musical, making the puzz feel less like a single effect and more like an extension of the guitar and amplifier.

At maximum intensity, it produces the aggressive attack, upper-frequency energy and broad low end associated with late-period Hendrix fuzz tones. Roll back the guitar volume and it becomes clearer, leaner and highly responsive to picking dynamics.

Controlled Low End and Preserved Clarity

Fuzz Face-style circuits can sometimes produce excessive bass, particularly with humbuckers or darker amplifiers.

The puzz retains a solid, muscular low end without allowing it to overwhelm the rest of the sound. It feels powerful but remains articulate enough to work effectively in a full band.

The output section is also designed to prevent excessive high-frequency loss when the pedal’s Volume control is reduced. This helps the puzz retain its presence and character across a wider range of output settings.

Second in the Fuzz Trilogy

The puzz is the second pedal in Eigo Matsuo’s planned Fuzz Trilogy—three evolved versions of his earlier fuzz designs, each preserving the special character of its predecessor while introducing new refinements.

  • Muzz: First pedal in the trilogy
  • puzz: Second pedal in the trilogy
  • Third model: To complete the series

For collectors of Lemon & Ginger pedals, the puzz represents an important chapter in the development of Eigo’s fuzz circuits.

Controls

  • Volume: Adjusts the overall output level
  • Fuzz: Controls gain, saturation and fuzz intensity
  • Footswitch: Activates or bypasses the effect

For the greatest range of sounds, set the Fuzz control high and regulate the pedal directly from the guitar’s volume control.

Enclosure

The distinctive recessed jack section is both visually attractive and practical.

Moving the connections inward creates more room around the top of the pedal and increases the distance between the knobs and footswitch. This reduces the chance of accidentally changing the settings when activating the effect.

The design also makes the enclosure more compact. Depending on the pedalboard, the patch and power cables can be routed downward and behind the board for a particularly tidy installation.

Power

  • 9V DC external power
  • Centre-negative / tip-negative polarity
  • A high-quality isolated power supply is recommended
  • Power supply is not included unless specifically stated
