Rare Italian Tube-Driven Magnetic Drum Echo

A superb example of the legendary Binson Echorec 2 T7E, Serial #2312, in Very Good cosmetic condition and excellent technical working order.

This is a particularly interesting example for collectors and studios, having been serviced by Franco Avona in April 2025. Avona is one of the most respected specialists associated with the restoration and servicing of original Binson Echorec machines. During the service, one oscillator, one capacitor and one magnet were replaced, while the unit retains its original wiring, original tubes and the majority of its original components.

The drum has also been professionally rewired by LGK Teknik / Lars Göran Karlsson, making this a serious, fully serviced vintage Echorec ready for regular studio or performance use.

The Echorec 2

Unlike conventional tape echo machines, the Binson Echorec records the signal onto a rotating magnetic drum, with multiple playback heads positioned around the drum. This ingenious system gives the Echorec its unmistakable combination of delay, feedback, modulation and reverb-like ambience.

The result is an echo unlike any conventional tape machine: organic, three-dimensional and slightly unpredictable, with a characteristic rhythmic quality that has made the Echorec one of the most sought-after vintage echo systems ever produced.

The Echorec 2 became an iconic part of the sound of the 1960s and 1970s. Its distinctive echoes and swells can be heard throughout the work of Pink Floyd, while the unit has remained highly prized by recording engineers, producers and guitarists looking for the unmistakable sound of a genuine vintage Binson.

And visually, few pieces of vintage studio equipment can compete with it: the illuminated plexiglass fascia, glowing magic-eye level indicator and mechanical drum transport make the Echorec as much a piece of industrial design as it is an effects machine.

Cosmetic condition: VERY GOOD

The front panel is exceptionally clean with no significant issues. The cabinet shows natural signs of aging, particularly on the top of the cover, but overall the machine presents extremely well for its age.

Controls & Operation

The front panel provides an unusually versatile range of control over the Echorec's characteristic echo sound:

Input Control
Controls the signal level entering the delay circuit. The input stage can also be driven harder for additional tube coloration and overdrive.

Length of Swell
Controls feedback and the number of repeats.

Volume
Controls the level of the delayed signal.

Bass / Treble
Provides subtle tonal shaping of the effect signal, from darker to brighter.

Selector
Three operating modes:

• Echo — classic short, slapback-style echo

• Repeat — standard repeating delay

• Swell — overlapping repeats creating a more spacious, reverb-like effect

Switch
Selects different combinations of the playback heads, allowing a wide variety of rhythmic delay patterns.

Level Indicator
The characteristic illuminated magic-eye valve indicates the input signal level.

Channel Selector
Provides access to the three input channels and their corresponding outputs, allowing flexible routing of dry and effected signals.
