1962 Fender Princeton 6G2 Brownface Tube Amp

Rare 1962 Brownface Princeton – Original 6G2 Circuit

This 1962 Fender Princeton 6G2 is a beautiful example of Fender’s legendary Brownface era, produced between 1961 and 1963.

The 6G2 Princeton is one of Fender’s most sought-after small vintage tube amplifiers, combining a compact format with the distinctive Brownface-era Fender sound— warm, dynamic, highly touch-sensitive and capable of producing beautiful natural tube breakup when pushed.

This example is in very good cosmetic condition and remains largely original. Importantly, the original circuit, output transformer and power transformerare all retained.

The amplifier has recently been serviced, with only selected capacitors and resistors replaced as part of normal maintenance, together with a new AC power cord and replacement filter can.

The Famous Fender Brown Era Sound

The 6G2 Princeton is an especially desirable amplifier for players who want the characteristic sound of Fender’s early-’60s Brownface period.

Its relatively low power allows the amp to respond dynamically to your playing, producing excellent touch sensitivity, harmonic richness and natural power-tube breakup.

With a guitar plugged directly into the amplifier, it delivers the unmistakable Brownface character — lively, responsive and highly musical.

Fender 6G2 Circuit

The Princeton uses Fender’s 6G2 Brownface circuit, featuring a fixed-bias push-pull output stage and cathodyne phase inverter.

The approximately 12-watt output provides a wonderful balance between clean headroom and natural tube saturation, making this amp particularly enjoyable for recording, studio work and smaller stages.

The amplifier also features Fender’s bias-modulated tube tremolo, controlled by dedicated Speed and Intensity controls.

Original Transformers & Circuit

A major selling point of this example is the preservation of its important original components.

The amp retains:

  • Original 6G2 circuit
  • Original power transformer
  • Original output transformer
  • Original handwired construction
  • Original cabinet
  • Original brown Tolex
  • Original wheat grille cloth

These original components are particularly important when evaluating a vintage Fender amplifier.

Speaker

The amp currently has a 1970s Fender-label Oxford 10″ speaker.

This is not the original speaker from 1962, but it is a period Fender-label Oxford speaker from the 1970s and is a very appropriate match for the amplifier.

Service & Updates

The amplifier has been recently serviced and is ready to use.

Service work includes:

  • Selected capacitors replaced
  • Selected resistors replaced where required
  • New filter can: CE Manufacturing C-EC20x3-525A
  • New AC power cord and plug
  • General service and inspection

These updates were carried out to improve reliability while preserving the original circuit and important vintage components.

Cabinet & Cosmetic Condition

The amplifier is in very good cosmetic condition.

The original cabinet retains its very nice brown textured Tolex and its original grille cloth.

The original handle has been replaced with a reproduction leather handle.

The footswitch is the correct style for the amplifier. Please refer to the photographs for details regarding its originality.

Important Voltage Information

This Princeton is a US-specification 110/117V amplifier.

When used in Europe or other countries with different mains voltage, a suitable step-down transformer is required.
