About this amplifier

The Fender Deluxe 6G3 is one of the most sought-after amplifiers from Fender’s Brownface era. Produced from 1961 to 1963, the 6G3 sits at a fascinating point in Fender history, between the tweed amplifiers of the 1950s and the blackface designs that followed.

With its roughly 20 watts of power, dual 6V6GT output tubes and original 12-inch Jensen speaker, the 6G3 delivers the distinctive combination of warmth, touch sensitivity, natural compression and aggressive overdrive that has made these amps legendary.

Compared with the cleaner, more scooped blackface Fender sound that followed, the Brown Deluxe has a more mid-forward, raw and immediate character. Turn it up and it comes alive.

The 6G3 also features Fender’s distinctive bias-modulated tremolo, giving the amplifier its wonderfully organic, pulsating character.

This particular example is an especially interesting survivor, retaining its original transformers, original circuit and original vintage Jensen C12N-family speaker, together with its original potentiometers apart from one later-added tone control.

Servicing & modifications

The amplifier has been serviced and is ready to play.

The following work and replacements have been carried out:

  • Reproduction leather handle
  • New power cord with new solid plug
  • Reproduction footswitch
  • Some new high-quality filter capacitors and resistors
  • One later-added tone potentiometer
  • New high-quality speaker cable and jack
  • Original Jensen replacement speaker professionally reconed by Carl’s Custom Amps, USA

The original tube chart was quite damaged, so I sourced a new, correct custom-made reproduction from Northstage, UK, faithfully made for this amplifier.

Grill cloth

The amplifier now wears the correct vintage wheat grill cloth, which is extremely rare and increasingly difficult to find.

When I acquired the amplifier, it had a reproduction Oxblood grill cloth fitted. I was fortunate enough to obtain the correct vintage wheat material through Carl, and it suits this Deluxe beautifully.

There are also some small holes underneath the cabinet from old additional feet that had been fitted at some point. These are minor and have no impact on the amplifier.

The wood on the inside of the bottom panel was once painted clear blue.

Original vintage Jensen speaker from 1962 · professionally reconed

One of the highlights of this Deluxe is its vintage Jensen speaker dating from 1962. While it is not the speaker originally factory-installed in this amplifier, it is an authentic period-correct reconed Jensen C12 NF C6915 2 from December 1962.

Date code: 220251 · December 1962

The speaker has been professionally reconed by Carl’s Custom Amps, USA, and sounds fantastic.

A piece of Fender history

The 6G3 was produced for only a relatively short period, from 1961 to 1963, before Fender moved on to the blackface Deluxe design.

That short production period, combined with the unique character of the Brownface circuit, has made the 6G3 one of the most collectible and desirable Fender Deluxe models.

This is not simply an old Fender amp. It is one of those amplifiers that has a sound and personality all of its own.

And this particular example has the kind of history, original components and carefully considered servicing that make it especially interesting to both players and collectors.
