RFO Electronics elMo' — Vintage Fender Blackface Tone
The RFO Electronics elMo' is a distinctive boutique overdrive designed to capture the smooth, dynamic character of cranked vintage Fender Blackface amplifiers — with its inspiration coming directly from Stevie Ray Vaughan's legendary El Mocambo tone.
The famous 1983 El Mocambo performance is widely associated with SRV's huge, saturated yet remarkably articulate Fender sound, and the elMo' was developed around that particular tonal concept. Rather than simply adding distortion, it aims for the feel and response of a pushed Blackface amp: smooth overdrive, plenty of dynamics, strong note definition and the characteristic scooped Fender-style midrange.
Technically, the elMo' uses a quad op-amp design feeding a dedicated gain stage with high-speed silicon diodes. Its unusual tone-stack configuration is specifically tuned toward the familiar Blackface EQ character, producing a broad, open sound that works particularly well with Stratocasters and other Fender-style guitars.
One of the most interesting features is RFO Electronics' full-bypass momentary relay switching system. The soft-touch switch requires only a light press rather than the heavy stomp associated with conventional mechanical footswitches. The relay switching is designed to greatly reduce the annoying switching "pop" that can sometimes be heard through an amplifier.
The switching system also incorporates a useful battery-saving design. With no cable connected to the instrument input, the battery is disconnected from the circuit. When an instrument cable is inserted, the pedal powers up and the LED flashes twice, indicating that the internal relay system has initialized correctly and the pedal is in bypass.

| Things you should know about your RFO Electronics effect's switching | RFO Electronics effects have a default setting of This means that when you first power your effect, or yourpedal board up, your effect will be in the BYPASS state. Remember, when using your effect on battery power, always remove the instrument input cable from the effect. This will ensure that your battery will provide you the longest life possible. When using a DC power supply, your RFO Electronics effect will automatically disconnect from the battery, and power willbe supplied by the DC power When a DC power supply is being used, your effect's LED will immediately provide twoflashes, and be in BYPASS, ready for use. If using a battery when the apparent malfunction occurs, if possible, switch to a DC power If one is not available, replace the battery with a fresh battery. While this may sound like common sense, nearly 100% of the switching issues that we have experienced have been the result of a very weak or dead 9V battery. |
