Lemon & Ginger Takotavia Octafuzz – Handmade in Tokyo
Limited-production analogue octave fuzz
Includes original box, manual and warranty
Product Description
What happens when Japanese imagination meets one of the wildest fuzz circuits ever created?
“Tako” is the Japanese word for octopus. Combine Tako with Octavia, and you get the Takotavia.
The Lemon & Ginger Takotavia is a handmade analogue octave fuzz inspired by the legendary Tycobrahe Octavia. Builder Eigo Matsuo deliberately kept the circuit close to the original concept, preserving its powerful upper octave, raw harmonic response and beautifully unstable personality.
Only subtle changes were made to give the pedal Eigo’s preferred voicing and the unmistakable Lemon & Ginger character.
The result is not a polite or predictable modern effect. The Takotavia is expressive, explosive and gloriously alive. Single notes can bloom into metallic upper harmonics, while bends and changes in picking dynamics create shifting overtones that react almost like an additional instrument.
It produces the most pronounced octave effect when played around or above the 12th fret, particularly with the neck pickup and the guitar’s tone control rolled back slightly. Into an overdriven tube amplifier, it delivers the fiery, vocal lead sounds associated with the most celebrated psychedelic and late-’60s octave-fuzz tones.
Made to Work with Other Pedals
Although the Takotavia can certainly be used on its own, Eigo especially recommends combining it with another overdrive or fuzz pedal.
Turning down the Boost control and pairing the Takotavia with a favourite drive pedal reveals another side of the circuit: focused, harmonically complex and capable of becoming beautifully aggressive when stacked.
Try it before an overdrive for additional compression and sustain, or combine it with another fuzz to create new textures. The interaction between the pedals is part of the Takotavia experience—experimenting is warmly encouraged.
Intelligent Battery Switching
Traditional battery-powered pedals normally require the input cable to be unplugged after use to prevent the battery from draining.
The Takotavia offers a clever alternative: turning the Volume control fully to zero disconnects the battery internally, producing the same result as removing the input cable.
This preserves battery life without repeatedly plugging and unplugging the pedal.
Controls
- Volume: Adjusts the overall output level
- Boost: Controls the circuit’s gain and fuzz intensity
- Battery switch: Turning Volume completely to zero disconnects the battery
- Footswitch: Activates or bypasses the effect
Selected Components
- Motorola MPSA18 transistor
- Motorola MPS6519 transistor
- Panasonic 150 pF ceramic capacitor
- Toshin Kogyo 0.1 µF PET capacitor
- ECI 33 µF / 16V capacitor
- Nichicon 100 µF / 35V capacitor
- Nichicon 220 µF / 35V capacitor
- Hitachi 1N34A germanium diode
- Xicon 42TM-011 transformer
These carefully selected components are central to the Takotavia’s raw response, pronounced upper octave and unmistakably vintage character.
Power Requirements
- Standard 9V battery
- Battery is disconnected when Volume is turned fully to zero
- No conventional external DC input
An optional conversion connector may allow operation from an isolated 9V DC, centre-negative power supplythrough the battery connection. Only mention this in the product listing if the connector is included with the particular pedal.
Never share its power connection with ordinary pedals. An isolated power output is essential.

Handmade Finish
The enclosure is largely painted and printed by hand. Slight variations in colour, texture and printing are natural characteristics of the production process and make every Takotavia visually unique.
These details are part of its handmade character—not manufacturing defects.
Limited Production
Due to the restricted availability of the specialist components used in its construction, production was planned as a series of small batches totalling only 108 Takotavia pedals.
This makes the Takotavia far more than another Octavia-inspired pedal: it is a highly limited piece of Japanese boutique-pedal craftsmanship. Official Lemon & Ginger product information
Warranty
Lemon & Ginger offers free repair for manufacturing or operational defects occurring within six months of purchase.
The customer is responsible for return shipping unless the problem is reported within one week of receiving the pedal, in which case the builder also covers the return shipping costs. Warranty coverage is subject to the builder’s applicable terms and inspection.
