A beautiful and rare 1962 Epiphone Devon Tremolo EA-35T, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan by Gibson during the golden era of American tube amplification.

The Epiphone EA-35T Devon Tremolo is one of the less commonly encountered Kalamazoo-made Epiphone amplifiers. It belongs to the same family of designs as the contemporary Gibson GA-8T, but the Epiphone version is considerably less common and is still relatively obscure among collectors.

This particular example is in excellent cosmetic condition for its age and retains an impressive amount of its original equipment. The original blue/grey textured Tolex is exceptionally clean, together with the original grille cloth, metal script Epiphone logo, original transformers, original potentiometers and original 12″ Jensen Alnico speaker.

Perhaps most importantly, the amplifier still retains its original tremolo footswitch, stored in its original holder inside the cabinet. Even the distinctive original handle remains a particularly charming detail, featuring a clear plastic centre with a section of the amplifier’s Tolex embedded inside.

Originality & Service

The amplifier is largely original.

The original power and output transformers are present, with date codes consistent with the period:

The original Jensen 12″ Alnico speaker carries code 220-0105, dating to the 5th week of 1961, which is entirely plausible for an amplifier produced in 1962.

The amplifier has been properly serviced for safe and reliable operation. Service work includes replacement of selected electrolytic capacitors, cleaning of the potentiometers, jacks and tube sockets, installation of a safe three-prong grounded power cable, and checking/biasing of the power tubes to specification.

These service updates have been carried out with the aim of preserving the original character and circuitry of the amplifier rather than altering its vintage tone.

Sound

The Devon Tremolo is a wonderfully straightforward and musical amplifier.

Its approximately 15-watt output, pair of 6BQ5/EL84 power tubes and 12″ Jensen Alnico speaker give it a remarkably full sound for such a compact combo. It has a warm, immediate response with a natural breakup when pushed, while the onboard tube-driven tremolo adds everything from gentle movement to deep vintage pulse.

The combination of 12″ Jensen Alnico speaker, EL84-style power section and simple control layout gives the EA-35T a distinctive voice that sits somewhere between classic American and early British-influenced tube character.

This is one of those relatively unsung vintage amplifiers that rewards anyone who actually plugs a guitar into it. It has plenty of personality, excellent touch response and a very musical breakup curve.

History

Epiphone amplifiers of this period were produced in Kalamazoo, Michigan, alongside Gibson’s own amplifier production. During the early 1960s, Epiphone was undergoing an important period of transition following Gibson’s acquisition of the brand.

The Devon EA-35T belongs to this fascinating period and represents one of the more interesting tremolo-equipped Epiphone combos of the era. While Gibson-branded amplifiers tend to receive considerably more attention from collectors, the corresponding Epiphone models are often much harder to find.

Today, the Devon Tremolo is appreciated for its combination of rarity, compact size, genuine Kalamazoo construction, original Jensen speaker and distinctive tube-driven tremolo.

For collectors of Gibson/Epiphone amplifiers, early American tube-amp enthusiasts, or simply players looking for something different from the usual Fender fare, this is a particularly cool and uncommon piece.
